Two large clusters of thunderstorms moved across the state during the overnight hours of July 26th to July 27th both of these events featured very strong winds as the main threat with winds reported over 80 mph.  We also had penny to baseball sized hail reported, and a litte damage because of the combination of the strong winds and large hail.  Because the storms were moving quickly across the state, rainfall totals weren’t all that impressive.  Here is a look at some totals, I got these off of CoCoRaHS, which is a collabrative weather reporting website worth checking out!  7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-ED-5 Roscoe 0.3 NNW 1.32 0.0 NA SD Edmunds 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-FK-1 Faulkton 9.1 ENE 1.23 0.0 NA SD Faulk 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-ED-2 Ipswich 1.8 W 0.95 0.0 NA SD Edmunds 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-ED-7 Ipswich 9.5 SSE 0.90 0.0 NA SD Edmunds 7/27/2008 9:00 AM SD-BR-9 Aberdeen 0.3 NE 0.86 0.0 NA SD Brown 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-ST-1 Hayes 20.8 NW 0.77 0.0 NA SD Stanley 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-MP-1 Leola 8.9 ENE 0.75 0.0 NA SD McPherson 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-ED-4 Ipswich 0.2 NNW 0.74 0.0 NA SD Edmunds 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-CR-4 Mobridge 8.0 NNW 0.63 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-MH-6 Baltic 2.4 W 0.61 0.0 NA SD Minnehaha 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-HT-2 Parkston 6.6 S 0.55 0.0 NA SD Hutchinson 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-BD-1 Wolsey 7.9 E 0.55 0.0 NA SD Beadle 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-BR-11 Aberdeen 1.5 SSW 0.54 0.0 NA SD Brown 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-SL-1 Onida 20.7 W 0.48 0.0 NA SD Sully 7/27/2008 8:24 AM SD-CR-6 Mcintosh 8.7 WSW 0.43 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-CR-10 Morristown 7.7 WSW 0.40 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-MN-1 Fulton 9.4 N 0.39 0.0 NA SD Miner 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-CP-1 Mound City 0.4 ENE 0.38 0.0 NA SD Campbell 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-CR-3 McLaughlin 10.1 ENE 0.30 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-RB-1 Sisseton 3.8 W 0.28 0.0 NA SD Roberts 7/27/2008 6:00 AM SD-CR-12 McLaughlin 9.0 WNW 0.27 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-CY-3 Vermillion 10.8 NNE 0.25 0.0 NA SD Clay 7/27/2008 8:10 AM SD-MH-5 Garretson 7.3 WSW 0.25 0.0 NA SD Minnehaha 7/27/2008 9:00 AM SD-WL-2 Hoven 2.4 N 0.25 0.0 NA SD Walworth 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-CR-5 Mobridge 16.6 WNW 0.24 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 5:00 AM SD-RB-5 Sisseton 9.4 ESE 0.21 0.0 NA SD Roberts 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-CR-1 Morristown 7.7 SSE 0.21 0.0 NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-LK-1 Madison 4.6 W 0.19 0.0 NA SD Lake 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-MD-20 Newell 30.4 E 0.18 0.0 NA SD Meade 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-HK-6 Milesville 6.1 NW 0.17 0.0 NA SD Haakon 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-PK-9 Lemmon 12.5 WSW 0.17 0.0 NA SD Perkins 7/27/2008 7:50 AM SD-CY-1 Vermillion 8.5 N 0.16 0.0 NA SD Clay 7/27/2008 7:45 AM SD-WL-3 Lowry 1.1 WNW 0.15 0.0 NA SD Walworth 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-DV-1 Mitchell 1.7 SSE 0.11 0.0 NA SD Davison 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-DV-4 Mitchell 1.1 N 0.09 0.0 NA SD Davison 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-DL-1 Clear Lake 0.6 SSW 0.08 0.0 NA SD Deuel 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-TR-3 Marion 0.5 NE 0.07 0.0 NA SD Turner 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-MD-9 Faith 36.3 W 0.07 0.0 NA SD Meade 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-FR-1 Hot Springs 0.5 SSW 0.06 0.0 NA SD Fall River 7/27/2008 7:00 AM SD-TR-1 Viborg 0.2 NNE 0.06 0.0 NA SD Turner 7/27/2008 7:30 AM SD-LY-5 Presho 13.8 NW 0.06 0.0 NA SD Lyman 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-BK-3 Brookings 1.4 SW 0.06 0.0 NA SD Brookings 7/27/2008 8:00 AM SD-SL-3 Agar 12.6 W 0.05 0.0 NA SD Sully 7/27/2008 9:00 AM SD-CR-11 Timber Lake 10.1 N 0.05 NA NA SD Corson 7/27/2008 6:00 AM SD-MH-1 Sioux Falls 3.4 ESE 0.04 0.0 NA SD Minnehaha

If you have noticed the smoke in the air, you aren’t alone.  A north-northeast breeze today is moving smoke our way from Canada.  This is wildfire season there and the smoke is taking an unusual path through KELOLAND today.  Visibilities have ranged from 2-6 miles with the haze and you can certainly smell it in Sioux Falls.  If you are sensitive to smoke, you may want to avoid being outdoors for lengthy periods of time today.  We’ll have more on the smoke on KELOLAND NEWS at noon and again at 5pm.-Brian Karstens
