It’s the last day of August and we’re just around the corner from a holiday weekend – so we’re looking at what experts are predicting in terms of travel and gas prices.  Are you planning to travel this weekend?  How do your plans compare to years past?

Last night’s rain pushed Sioux Falls over the 30-inch mark for the year.  We’ll take a look back at record rainfall.

Storms moving through Dimock, South Dakota, caused some damage at a lumber yard and a farm.  We’ll show you the damage tonight on KELOLAND News.

We’ll also have an update from Mayor Mike Huether on Sioux Falls construction projects.  He’s holding a news conference at 10:30 a.m. today to go over the details.

Apparently there’s a lot of talk about a pesky insect known as the “earwig” — supposedly the population is at peak levels — and people just want to get rid of them. We pulled up some photos of the bug during the meeting and it was met by oohs and ahhs. Are you noticing more earwigs this summer?

Today we’re working on several stories including:

– We have a crew on the way to an accident that has closed I-90 near the Bridgewater exit. More details to come.

– We’re in

  • Rain last night added to the flooding concerns for communities in KELOLAND.  We’re near Orange City and Lake Poinsett, and we’re also checking out damage left behind by the strong winds.  Be sure to send your photos in: uShare or

  • Officials have approved AT&T’s acquisition of Alltel … and this topic dominated our morning meeting.  What does this mean for Alltel customers?  How much longer before the iPhone makes its South Dakota debut?  We’re getting your thoughts on the topic on our Facebook page.  What are your thoughts?  Have you been waiting to get an iPhone?  If your current provider is not Alltel, would you leave them to get an iPhone?
  • We talked about the group threatening to sue McDonald’s if they don’t stop including toys in their kid’s meals (by warner).  Some of the parents in our newsroom talked about how the toys may be a positive reinforcement for kids who eat their meal.  Others discussed the toys as “collector’s items.”  It’s getting some discussion on our forums as well.  What do you think?  Let us know in the comment section below.

We’re sorting through all the storm damage reports from the overnight hours.  Thanks for sending in your photos and reports.  We were able to piece together a few of them in our story “Storms Rip Through Parts Of KELOLAND” this morning.

This photo just came in from Louella in Brandon, SD.

You can send photos and videos to us on uShare or

Damage, damage, damage resonated in our morning meeting.  And while our main focus will be covering the impact from the storms, we’re also working on the Matt Adamski/Sioux Empire Fair story that hit the wire this morning.
